1st Day - USA/LONDON
Depart from your home city for the overnight trans-Atlantic flight to London. Daylight flights may also be available. Dinner and in-flight entertainment en-route.
2nd Day - LONDON
Morning arrival in London, once the center of the universe during the heydays of the British Empire. Clear immigration and customs. As you exit customs you will be greeted by a local representative of Griffin International. They will assist you with your baggage and transfer you to the five-star Churchill Hotel located in the MayFair district. Remainder of the day at leisure to rest and acclimate. Evening welcome reception and dinner at the hotel followed by a brief welcome introduction by our expert lecturer.
3rd Day - LONDON
After breakfast our tour begins with a visit to St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster. Sir Winston married Clementine Hozier here in 1908. Then on to Westminster Abbey. In the floor not far from the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is a stone with the inscription “ Remember Winston Churchill “ . It was placed there shortly after he died, on the 25th anniversary of The Battle of Britain. View the famous statue of Churchill in Parliament Square. He looks across the street at Big Ben and the House of Commons where he spent 60 years of his life. Then drive by Nr. 10 Downing Street the official residence of the Prime Minister. Late morning return to the hotel.
Afternoon visit to the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth. There are several important exhibits here touching on Churchill’s wartime experience. Return to the hotel via Hyde Park Gate where he died on January 25, 1965.
4th Day - LONDON
Morning drive through the scenic English countryside to Blenheim Palace. The mansion was built by a grateful nation for the Duke of Marlborough after his stunning victory over the French in Blenheim, Bavaria in 1704. We will tour the palace and see the room where the future Prime Minister was born in November 1874. In adjacent rooms large photo-murals trace his career as a student, soldier, war correspondent, statesman and historian. There are also some recordings of his famous speeches, excerpts from letters and a selection of his paintings. We will also tour the exterior with its own park, lake and hundreds of old oaks. Continue to the tiny churchyard at Bladon, just a few miles away where Churchill lies buried next to the graves of his father and mother. His grave is marked by a massive stone with a simple inscription: “ Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill 1874 - 1965 “. Afternoon return to London.
5th Day - LONDON
This morning we will visit the Cabinet War Rooms. Our guide will lead us through the maze of subterranean rooms where the British Cabinet met in secret during the London Blitz and afterward. The crammed, austere rooms are exactly as they were on the last day of the war. It is hard to believe that some of the key decisions concerning World War II were made in this very Spartan place - it was not even bomb-proof! Late morning return to the hotel. Optional afternoon tour of the Royal Air Force Museum. Evening theater performance.
6th Day - LONDON
After breakfast we depart London and head south into Kent, through the village of Westerham to Churchill’s country home at Chartwell. Sir Winston purchased the estate in 1922. The family loved being at Chartwell and the surrounding 79 acres of land. The property is now part of the National Trust. The interior is exactly as it was during the many years the Churchills lived there. We will tour the house and the extensive grounds and have lunch on the property. Afternoon visit to nearby Leeds Castle considered by many to be the most beautiful castle in the world.
7th Day - LONDON
Full day at leisure for your own adventures. You may want to stop by Fortnum and Mason’s on Piccadilly and purchase a Dundee cake from Scotland, one of Sir Winston’s favorites. Farewell reception and dinner at the hotel.
8th Day - LONDON
After breakfast transfer to the airport for the return trans-Atlantic flight home.
